As they approach the second half of the season, both the boys and girls wrestling teams have produced some impressive results.

The girls’ team just finished the Norm Manstedt Invitational held on Jan 8 at High Plains High School, where they brought home ninth place out of 43 teams. Two girls medaled, including sophomore Sherly Gonzalez (120), placing second, and senior Caly Settles (110) finishing fourth. The girls battled for a top spot with more than 645 competitors throughout the 14 weight brackets.

Along with impressive performances, team members seem to enjoy things other than just winning as well.

“I love that even if we are having an off day, the team still makes it a fun and positive experience,” freshman Makinley Eggleston said. With upcoming competitions, Makinley said her approach is to go into every match with a positive mindset and know that anything can happen - whether she wins or loses.

On the boys’ team, they have also seen much success so far. “The team’s current record is 6-2, and they have some upcoming duals that will host tough competition,” said junior Logan Svoboda. As Logan reflects on his season, he said he has many goals for what is to come, but also feels accomplished.

“I have two main goals for the rest of this season: win the state championship and get the pin record,” Logan said.

With the season over halfway finished, both teams are preparing for the end of the regular season and prepping for postseason endeavors. According to Logan, a handful of the wrestlers on the boys’ team attend a club to improve their skills. He said he feels that going to this club has shaped a better bond within the group through their shared passion for the sport.
